Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, Birmingham Changing Futures Together provides better support to those in society with facing multiple disadvantage by pioneering new ways of working, with services led by those with lived experience, using innovative technology and close partnerships with specialist agencies across the city to provide a faster, better informed and more unified approach to support.

BCFT website went live in July 2021

While the Birmingham Changing Futures Together site had valuable content that would help peer organisations in delivering better services to clients, It unfortunately it failed to deliver a valuable experience to users. There were issues with corruptions, content delivery, information architecture, user journey, user interface design and general administration. Additionally from a design perspective the site expressed a rather bleak view of the work that Birmingham Changing Futures Together does and the situations of people experiencing multiple disadvantage. We needed to deconstruct the site and create a digital experience that better serves the programme and its users moving forward.

Website design for BCFT

Our aim was to transform the Birmingham Changing Futures Together website to make it user friendly, content accessible and visually upbeat. The process began with an exploratory workshop to get the client’s perspective on what they wanted to achieve with the website. We challenged information architecture, content strategy, user experience and interface design. This analytical approach enabled us to formulate an improved strategy that would deliver a more logical and accessible digital experience for users.

Beyond the challenge of information architecture and user experience was the overall aesthetic of the site. We instantly saw an opportunity to reinvigorate the incumbent low quality and seemingly negative imagery by creating an uplifting proprietary illustration style that would both compliment the Birmingham Changing Futures Together visual identity and speak to the success that they bring to people’s lives.

The journey with Birmingham Changing Futures Together was really satisfying and we’re happy to have created a site that users feel is an intuitively navigated and visually vibrant environment where interesting and relevant content can be accessed easily.

The new website enables those working within support services to embed some of our initiatives into their workplace. The website is now full of personal stories and journeys, videos of our volunteers, blogs from the frontline and practical toolkits to support staff. I feel that Herron took onboard our requirement to show that those facing multiple disadvantage can have bright futures and fulfilled lives.
